The Top 5 Ways to Photograph Your Kids In Summer - Jen Zav Photography

Ohhh summer, how I love you. The warm weather, the flip flops, the light well into the evening – these are just a few of the reasons it’s my favorite season. It’s also a perfect time to catch lots of great photos of your kids. Each year when I look back, summer tends to be the season with the most pictures. Here are my top 5 categories for capturing summer with your kids:

1. The FOOD

Summer offers SO MANY classic meals and treats: watermelon, fresh berries, popsicles, ice cream (my fave!), burgers, corn on the cob, s’mores – these all scream summer! Snapping some pics of your kids enjoying their favorite foods is a great way capture the essence of the season.

2. Water Play

What would summer be without cooling off by the water?! Whether that’s swimming in a pool or lake, taking a trip to the beach, busting out the water table, hitting a splash pad or even running through the backyard sprinkler – nothing says summer like getting wet! Just beware of rogue splashes and sand to keep your phone or camera protected!

3. Playground Adventures

Schools out and it’s a great time to visit the local playground. This is the perfect opportunity to catch some action shots. They'll be moving quickly so be ready and snap often! Set your digital camera to action mode or shutter priority with a shutter speed of at least 1/250. Or use the burst or live mode on your phone to help catch the best moments.

4. Friends

I have so many great memories of playing with friends in summertime. Be sure to capture those special relationships!

5. Nature

Summer is a great time for getting dirty and becoming one with nature! Whether your kids like to explore bugs, play in the mud, go fishing, go on a nature hike, or work in a garden, summer has tons of options for getting into the great outdoors!

Now it's time to get out there and have fun! Happy summer!
